Welcome to Dyslexican, providing dyslexia assessments and testing for young people and adults from the age of 16.

Dyslexican is a dyslexia assessment service for young people and adults looking for a dyslexia diagnosis. Dyslexican is based in Bedford and the service covers all areas of Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire.

Carrie-Anne Hammond is a specialist teacher and assessor of specific learning difficulties, with over 25 years experience of working in education and with individuals with SEND (Special Educational Needs & Disabilities).

Dyslexia Assessment Process

Assessment

Dyslexia can only be formally identified through a diagnostic assessment. The fee includes a consultation to gather background information and a comprehensive report (about 20-25 pages in length). A questionnaire will be sent out prior to the assessment, this will need to be completed and returned before the assessment date.

The assessment process usually lasts for between 3-4 hours and includes breaks taken as and when needed. During the assessment the individual will take part in a series of tests; these include phonological awareness, memory, speed of processing, reading, writing and spelling. The tests are varied and people often find this to be an enjoyable and interesting experience.

The written report will be sent out within two weeks of the assessment and will include test scores, a detailed analysis of the results and diagnosis of dyslexia if applicable.  The report will also outline strengths and weaknesses and recommendations for study, the workplace or daily life.

Why have a dyslexia assessment?

Some young people and adults find that although they have had difficulties with their learning throughout their education, these issues are often not picked up on or identified by teaching staff. Students may learn to mask their difficulties and so although on the surface they may be achieving good grades, the reality is they are having to put in a huge amount of effort and work behind the scenes to maintain this. A dyslexia assessment can help them to understand why they have these difficulties but also to recognise their strengths and how to use these in their learning.

As I am an assessor with a current Assessment Practising Certificate (APC) the dyslexia report I provide can be used when applying for Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) for students going to university. The report can also be used to support reasonable adjustments being made in the workplace.

About Me

I am a dyslexia specialist teacher and assessor with extensive experience of working with children and adults with learning difficulties and disabilities. As a parent to children with neurodiverse conditions, I have a passion for helping people to overcome obstacles to their learning and to achieve their full potential.  During my career I have supported, mentored and taught children and adults of all ages in schools, colleges and lifelong learning centres. For the last seven years my focus has been on supporting individuals within the FE (Further Education) sector, providing targeted tuition, intervention and strategies to overcome literacy difficulties and barriers to learning.

I specialise in providing diagnostic dyslexia assessments for young people and adults from the age of sixteen upwards. I am also qualified as an access arrangements assessor and can assess students for accommodations such as extra time, in compliance with JCQ (Joint Council for Qualifications) regulations.

I am fully qualified as a specialist teacher and dyslexia assessor and hold a current APC (Assessment Practising Certificate). I am a member of PATOSS (Professional association of teachers of students with specific learning difficulties). I also hold membership with the British Psychological Society as a registered test user. I have enhanced DBS clearance and am fully insured.

Testimonials

Carrie – Anne was extremely thorough and professional throughout my assessment. She put me at ease and made me feel comfortable. She explained the reasons behind each assessment and made sure I had understood the instructions before she began the tests. I would absolutely recommend Carrie-Anne her calming and positive nature was fabulous.

Im so grateful to Carrie-Anne at Dyslexican with helping me diagnose my dyslexia. As an adult that has always struggled since I was a child, I was uncertain that I had dyslexia but always felt I should get tested. Carrie-Anne made the process so easy to understand and is friendly, professional and welcoming. I cannot recommend her more highly.

This is how I found the dyslexia assessment. I found it very enjoyable and easy to understand. I was not rushed, which made it easy for me not to feel anxious or stressed out. I’m very happy that I had the opportunity to be seen by someone who is so kind and considerate towards me.
